Wednesday's DIY...garage floor epoxy...

Published on 8.03.2011 in , ,

Engineering Man and I have always liked the garage floors that have the colored epoxy coating...easier to clean, easier to keep clean, and less drug into the house as well...

...so, EM decided to be foreman and DIY the garage floor...

...well, sort of DIY...we didn't make the epoxy, we used a kit.  But, we didn't hire anyone to do it for us, so technically that's a DIY...although we did have a friend come over to help...

...ugh...ignore me...is it Friday yet??...

Anyway, we cleaned out the garage Friday night (there's boxes there still packed)...and put all the crap elsewhere in the house...

Saturday morning EM got up and started by buying a new toy, and then used it to CLEAN out all the dirt/debris left in the garage...

...and then used water to make sure it really was cleaned out as much as possible...

...The next step was the ETCH the floor so the epoxy would stick...it also is used to pull up stains and get the floor super clean...

...since our garage is new, this step didn't take a whole lot of time...actually, a very big reason we decided to do it now...

...this step included dumping a jug of stuff into a 1 gal plastic watering can and filling it up with water...

...Then EM spread it across the floor...

...and used a scrub brush to get all the stains off...

...and then the waiting game...before painting, the floor must be completely dry.  Since temperatures are well over 100 here, we waited about 4 hours before starting...

...To PAINT, we mixed Part A with Part B, stirred for 3 minutes, and waited for the two parts to combine for 30 minutes before applying it to the floor...

...while waiting, EM wanted to paint the apron of the garage as well, but only up to the door.  He closed the door, and with some help, taped along the edge...

...see, this is the line of the door...

...I then took blue painter's tape to tape a little farther into the garage, just so nothing could be seen from the outside...

...by this point, the paint was ready and we trimmed out the apron, and the walls of the garage...

...I sprinkled the flakes on because, well, Mr. Foreman (EM) said he wanted flakes...

...After cutting in, the guys started painting and I started flaking...

...they would paint areas 2 feet by 6 feet, and then I'd flake. (Note the flaked and non-flaked sections).  Painting coverage worked best by going over the area once horizontally and a second time vertically.

Three (ish) hours later, voila!
