What it means to be a parent...

Published on 11.16.2011 in

Sherry over at Young House Love wrote an article on Baby Center about the 10 Reasons She's Thankful for Clara (her daughter).  It's a great list and one I've told Engineering Man to on more than one occasion.

What would you add to the list?

Friday's Favorites...a little common sense...

Published on 4.29.2011 in ,

A friend recently recommended the following article...

...the author's stance is that dressing children like, well, prostitutes, is the parents' choice.  And...they need to stop being their child's friends.

My favorite quote:

"The way I see it, my son can go to therapy later if my strict rules have scarred him. But I have peace knowing he'll be able to afford therapy as an adult because I didn't allow him to wear or do whatever he wanted as a kid."

You know you married a keeper when...

Published on 9.15.2010 in , ,

Mini #1 had been upstairs watching his evening show Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. (I know...bad mom lets her child watch one episode before going to bed...I'll take my punishment later.)

Anyway, Mini #1 started crying and Engineering Man disappeared up the stairs to see what was wrong.

We'd been watching a show together, so I paused it, and waited...

...and waited...

...and waited...

Twenty minutes later I figured EM had decided to stay up with Mini #1 and started the show.

After another twenty minutes, and no EM, I headed up the stairs to see what was going on.

In our room was Mini #1 quietly watching his show...and Engineering Man passed out on the other side of the bed.

Mini #1 looked at me and politely asked..."Mommy, can you get me some chocolate milk?"

I told him yes and walked over the EM, shook him gently, he woke with a start...and the first words out of his mouth were:

"Oh, crap. I forgot the chocolate milk."

Thursday Things I'd Never Thought I'd Hear...

Published on 6.17.2010 in , , ,

We'd just gotten home and Mini #1 wanted to go downstairs.

"Daddy, please go down and turn on the lights."

"You know how to do it.  You can."

"No, daddy.  Go do that special trick you do, and turn on the lights."

Monday's weekend in review...

Published on 5.10.2010 in , , , ,

This weekend I set down the camera and spent most of the time looking at my boys without a camera lens between us.

Still, I didn't want to forget a few moments...

The weekend included blowing bubbles...

...catching them before they fall...

...multitasking...

...fixing swords...

...puppy love...

...bringing the outdoors in...

...and a new favorite picture of the boys...

Ah...motherhood...

Last night I was at a church meeting when I received the following text message from Engineering Man:

Awesome...

Any guesses on how many times we'll be at the emergency room in the next 15 years?

Engineering...Man?

Published on in , ,

I married someone who will never grow up.

This is most evidenced when he plays with Mini #1.

Case in point, this past week the following happened...

Ah, the joys of immaturity.

It makes me happy.

Mini Conversations

Published on 4.21.2010 in , ,

Listening to your almost 3-year-old talk to your newborn is a learning adventure.

What do you learn? What you say way too much.

Overheard as I was walking down the stairs:
"Be patient buddy. Mommy has to play with me first and then she'll come take care of you."

Overheard as we were pulling into the driveway:
"It's OK buddy. We're almost home."

Overheard as Mini #2 was screaming:
"STOP CRYING!!"

Overheard as Mini #2 was waking up:
"Good morning buddy."

Overheard as Mini #2 and daddy walked in the door:
"Hi buddy."

Overheard as a friend came by to meet Mini #2:
"This is my baby brother."

Overheard as I was getting ready for work:
*kiss* "I love you."

Friday's Favorites...Mini #1 and his favorite word

Published on 4.16.2010 in , , ,

This past weekend I was at my wit's end with Mini #1. Engineering Man was at drill and literally everything I asked Mini #1 he always said the opposite. No matter what.

Sunday, I counted how many times he said "No."

106.

Of those 106 times, 8 of them were just because I had asked a question like: "Do you want something to eat?"

Although, I did count it if he said "no" and then turned right around and said, "I want a granola bar."

Every other time it was for something he had to do, or absolutely couldn't do.

I also didn't count the number of times he said, "yes" when I told him "no."

Awesome. Just awesome.

My happiness of the day...

Published on 10.26.2009 in ,

Monday's weekend in review has been detained this week as I forgot my camera when I went to the farm.
Boo on me.

And, as I arrived at work and found out that of the 9 people in my office 1 was out with swine flu, 1 was out for pneumonia, and 1 was out for bronchitis, I realized my day wouldn't be happy.

And then I thought of this...

Mini #2 at 20 weeks

HAPPY MONDAY!

Ugly babies...

Published on 10.14.2009 in , ,

If you've ever been pregnant, you realize the anxieties associated with carrying a child.  Will the baby be healthy?  Will I be a good mom?  will he/she grow up right?  Will they have good morals?  Will I scar them for the rest of their lives by continuing to have sex when I'm pregnant?  (Uh, yea.  Just wait 'til you pregnant.  If it doesn't cross your mind, you KNOW it'll cross your husband's.)

And then the real kicker...will I have an ugly baby?

I know what you're thinking, and NO, I don't believe all kids are cute. I'm dead serious when I say that some babies are just plain ugly.

No, I'm not evil and say, "Oh, what an ugly child." How dumb do you think I am?
(By the way, pregnancy hormones are the least fabulous thing in the world.)

But I do not lie and tell them, "Oh, what a pretty baby."  I say something more like..."OH, he looks just like his daddy." (teehee)

Apparently God found it in his heart to not torture me with an ugly looking child.
I have a cute kid.  I mean, really adorable kid.  Just look at that face.

Seriously...I have a cute kid.

Thank you Jesus.

Now I'll just be praying about the second one...
