While sewing a skirt last week i came across my stash of random fabric I picked up years ago.
Cute stuff that demanded being a pillow.
Adds a little color and some flair to the living room. I like it!

I've always hated our backyard...well, at least the part that you could see when you're facing the house from the backyard.
It always seemed so...well, blah. This is an old photo from when they were building the house, but seriously...it really wasn't much better than this...
Until this past weekend.
Using a shovel, some plants, leftover brick, and a LOT of muscle, I dug out beds for some Knockout Roses and a mini garden.
The roses are under our bedroom window...
...and the veggies are under the kitchen window...
Love them!!

DIY of the week... a new front entry

When I couldn't use the garage (don't ask) we started using the front door.
This led to a major issue of bookbags and shoes and well, everything that seemed to come with using the front door (and...a front door that doesn't have a hall closet.....) :/
Anyway, I already had a great sign there, but knew that a pair of hooks and a storage bench would be fantastic additions.
The hooks were an easy IKEA buy. The bench was a different story. Our front door has side windows that go very low. Also, the area from the wall to the door hinges is not a "standard" size. :/
So...I went and bought this...
...flipped it over and made it into a bench. :)
Not only was it cheaper than the usual storage benches, but it fits perfectly.
Have you ever used a furniture item in a different way??

DIY of the week...drain spouts...

We have these around our house.
They're useful, but not exactly very pretty.
***And thanks to a very HELPFUl friend in construction I know they are officially named splash blocks. And the one in this picture is backward. Which means every splash block around our house is backward. Maybe it's just a trend in our house...***
And unfortunately, they didn't do a good job of holding back the water in a few spots by our sidewalk.
When we picked up Mini #1's swing set, they had rocks under it. They told us to take them and they've been sitting in our garage since.
I decided to put them to use under this drain spout...
...and this one...
...so now the front looks a little more "finished"...
...and not so builder...
Lots more to do before we're done though....

DIY of the week...a spring wreath...

My front door was looking lonely...
...so I grabbed a grapevine wreath from Michael's (half off at $2.50)...
...and some purple (lilac??) flowers that were on sale for $.99 a piece...
...So, for $5.50 my door looks a little happier...

I like to think that I'm crafty.
When it comes to cakes...not so much. That's my sister. She's fabulous and has always done the boys' cakes. Heck, even with Mini #2 I got off the hook because a girlfriend stepped in with the awesome Very Hungry Caterpillar cake...
Unfortunately, Mini #1's birthday snuck up on us. So, I decided to diy one myself.
I started by googling "dinosaur cake", and came across this listing. I figured I could finagle it to fit with what I wanted.
So, I made three round cakes.
Cut one in half and placed the two halves together to make the body...and cut another into a crescent to make the tail and the neck.
And then, well, then I just started chopping pieces until I was happy. Seriously...I have no idea how I did this, but here's a pic of the head, neck and legs...
...and the head from the back...
I did a quick crumb coat over it all...
...and then decorated with appropriate star tips, chocolate chips and graham crackers...
Thoughts? Besides the fact that it looks like an alligator with crazy scales on its back?? What cakes have you diy'd from a regular cake pan??

The door between the garage and the house has been white.
Needless to say, it doesn't stay white very long...
So, I took what paint I had left from the kitchen makeover and used it to freshen up the back door.
Now, truth time...do I need to paint the trim too?

DIY season trade of the week...

April is right around the corner (ugh...I know, right?), which means a new MANTEL!
In preparation, I decided to diy a quick wreath change yesterday.
I grabbed a fall wreath from last year and also some forsythia bush branches that I randomly picked up for free from my old job. I can't remember why, but they were going to throw them out, so I confiscated them.
Anyway, I took out all the fall stuff, put it in a bag and put it away with the rest of my random decorations.
Then, I took the forsythia, and placed them through the grapevine wreath just along one side of the wreath.
Stay tuned next week for the mantel reveal. After I get it done... :)

DIY of the week...tissue paper pom poms

When figuring out decor for Mini #2's birthday party, I thought a super fun giant caterpillar would be awesome.
Of course, how to make one was another story.
Hello Google.
After a quick search I found Martha's pom poms...fabulous and super easy.
So, I followed the directions and made the pom poms. Slightly smaller, so it'd be cheaper, but it still worked out.
Confession time...my sister fluffed and made the face...professional preschool teacher in action.

DIY of the week...a Pinterest inspiration...

A while back I saw this great idea on Pinterest for a Valentine's day wreath that's not...well, cutesy...
...at least not SUPER cutesy...
:)
So, I figured out a way to make my own.
I used a long "berry" strand, cut it in half, and used floral wire to tie it into the shape of an "X".
Then, using more floral wire, I attached it to a "O" wreath I already had.
What do you think? I know, not as cute as the original...but mine was FREE!...

The DIY Advent wreath...

As a kid, one of the coolest things I loved about Christmas was the Advent wreath.
It was so fun to see each new candle being lit...
...anticipation at its finest...
So, I wanted to do the same for the boys...only...cheap. Because well, I'm cheap.
So, I stuck a random red candle in the middle of my garage sale find...
...used little votives...
...and some quarter Christmas candle decorations...
...and voila! Super simple (and free) Advent wreath.
Mini #1 loves telling me how close we are to Christmas.
AND...that when we light the fourth candle is when we're going to be FLYING in an airplane to see the grandparents.
I'm so excited!!!

Here's a quick and easy way to make fun Christmas ornaments.
Mini #1 and I used the following...
...plastic Christmas ornaments...
...tempera paint...
...baby medicine droppers...
Mini #1 sucked paint into the dropper...
...and with a little help squirted it into the ornament.
Then, he shook the ornament...to make a super cool look.
That's it. What other quick and easy projects have you done this Christmas??

I had a ton of corks in my cabinets and when I saw some Pinterest wine cork monogram action I couldn't resist making my own.
I started by laying out the corks on a leftover piece of plywood.
And then traced around the corks to make a pattern for Engineering Man to cut out.
Don't ask why, but he used a Sawz-all...it was a blast.
After it was cut, I used some antiquing glaze to
darken the piece.
Then, I put the corks back on to make sure they still matched up with the cuts.
I finished it off by gluing the corks back into place.
And voila...instant addition to the cupboards. Total cost...FREE! Everything was on hand.

First up...a quick update to a garage sale find...

...with a little help from some $1 leaves, leftover ribbon, and pinecones on hand.
Then, Friday evening I headed to a friend's to make Trick-or-Treat bags for the boys.
Great, fun, quick way to remember what they were, and to have a keepsake from a holiday.
What "fall" diy have you done? Something classic, or something totally off the wall?? I'd love to see it!
